Key Sciences

The common theory relating to the cause of pimples and acne is that excessive production of sebum in the skin causes whiteheads.  The more likely case is that sebum production is quite normal, but that it is being prevented from leaving the pores as it would ordinarily do so as to moisturise the skin surface, thereby leading to whiteheads.

What is it that is clogging the pores? Excess breakdown of collagen in skin tissue could be responsible for causing shedding of dead cells and skin tissue into the pores, which clogs them up and leads to build-up of sebum under the skin surface. This build-up of dead tissue and toxins furthermore leads to redness and inflammation associated with pimples and acne.

What is this collagen which forms part of skin tissue? Collagen is a protein making up one-fourth of all the protein in the body.  Collagen is the fibrous, elastic connective tissue that holds our bodies together.

In the normal process of the body’s metabolism collagen goes through phases of being dissolved and being built up continuously. The process of dissolving collagen is vital for any cell to pass through the connective tissue.  To accomplish this, specific enzymes are secreted that temporarily digest the surrounding connective tissue.

This process occurs for healthy reasons such as ovulation where collagen-digesting enzymes dissolve enough of the ovarian wall to allow the egg to move through the fallopian tube and into the uterus.  Immune system cells also require collagen-dissolving enzymes to move through the connective tissue to where help is needed.

But what about the unhealthy instances of collagen-dissolving?  Viruses, bacteria and other microorganisms use this collagen-dissolving mechanism to initiate and spread an infection. Cancer metastasis likewise occurs because of this same process.

Collagen-dissolving enzymes are regulated by: (1) enzyme blockers that the body produces and (2) dietary enzyme regulators, particularly lysine and vitamin C.

Lysine is an essential amino acid. Sufficient dietary lysine blocks the anchor sites in the connective tissue for the collagen digesting enzymes. Without those anchor sites the enzymes cannot attach to and destroy the connective tissue.

Breakout Control is formulated with lysine in order to regulate collagen production and thus provide nutritional support for healthy skin.
